Dominant Woman

I suppose “dominance” means different things to different people. Recently I’ve been finding out just how different the definitions can be!! So, what does the dictionary (in this case the OED) say about it?

dominant: dominating, prevailing, most influential

dominance: 1. the state of being dominant. 2. control, authority

dominate: have a commanding influence on; exercise control over, have a commanding position over

Notice that nowhere are the words “hostile”, “abusive” or “angry” mentioned. Just as the words “discipline” and “punishment” are often misunderstood and thought to be interchangeable, so is the word “dominant” often misused.

So what is dominance then?

I can tell you what I think it is – and what I think it isn’t. Being dominant doesn’t mean abuse – verbal or otherwise, although if you come to me seeking that, I’m only too happy to oblige!
